English teachers have free time? Everything I've heard has been the opposite (despite the working hours limitations) ... but it wouldn't matter what job one had in Japan, since the work ethic there is much different than in Canada.

I have considered going over as a teacher, and it's still a viable option. I was hoping to continue working in the computer field as it's one of the few things I'm actually good at :P

For the moment, I've been applying to both schools and technology companies. I don't have a problem becoming a teacher for a year, nor do I expect it to be a cake walk. My primary motivation was to find something that made use of existing skill sets in an effort to build a stable career.

Hopped over from MsDanielle's site. Why don't you just go for a teaching job and actually work as a teacher for a year? It should give you enough free time to prepare for the wedding, and once you're married, you can switch to a spouse visa and then apply for any job you like.

I've been in Japan for ten years, and am married to a Japanese national.
