July 20th, 2007Five Years, Less a Day
This isn’t a prison sentence, but instead the amount of time I will have stayed in British Columbia before leaving on the next leg of migration. Five years ago I had joked with my parents that after this move to Vancouver, I would next move to Japan. While everyone had laughed at the time, it’s now eleven days away.
I will miss my time in BC. Friends have come and gone, and lessons have been learned. Throughout everything, I have become wiser for the experiences, and much more relaxed about the world around me. This doesn’t mean that my youthful passion has faded and died, but it has calmed down a bit.
So now comes the hard part. With less than two weeks remaining in Canada, I need to contact anyone that I owe money to and ensure my accounts are either paid off, or updated with new contact information. I’ll need to advise the government of my new location. My health care will also need to be cancelled and replaced with something that can be used in Japan. All in all, it shouldn’t be more than an afternoon or two on the phone.
I plan on keeping this website going, naturally. Just because I’m in another country doesn’t mean that I can’t still participate in the blogosphere. One concern that I do have, though, is the availability of the site.
This past Christmas, while I was in Asia, I had tried to connect to a few North American servers in order to IRC and check my email at work. Unfortunately, the host that I was using appeared to have been banned from a few of the servers, and this limited my connectivity. This ban is clearly a throw-back from the days when Japan was sending 90% of the world’s spam, but those days have long since ended.
Hopefully this will not be a problem.
My final day in Canada is July 31st, and my plane will depart at 11:55 am local time. Just like my first trip to Japan, this will involve a flight to Portland before going to Tokyo, then Nagoya. At each stop I will have an hour and a half to kill. This time, I’l be sure to avoid trouble with the Japanese immigration officers
