August 14th, 2007Japanese Biker Doesn’t Notice Missing Leg
I saw this in the news, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.
Apparently a Japanese man riding a motorcycle failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier. A friend picked up the missing limb and brought it the 2 km travelled by the oblivious rider.
This happened because the 54-year-old office worker was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central pillar. He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next light.
Both the man and his leg were brought to the hospital, but the limb had been crushed so badly that it could not be re-attached.
Now, I’m not the brightest crayon in the box, but if you hit something while riding a motorbike, and feel extreme pain immediately afterwards, would you not stop to check it? I know that some men try to over-compensate for some insecurities by saying “it’s just a scratch”, but a simple glance down would have told this person that he really should seek medical help sooner rather than later.
It’s a shame I couldn’t find a picture of the rider. It would have been interesting to see how tough this guy was.

Man that sucks. How does that happen? How can you not notice that you are peddling with one leg?
It seems the biker was riding a motorcycle, rather than a bicycle. Since he wouldn’t have needed the leg until coming to a complete stop, I guess he figured that he’d claim it was “just a scratch” and try to recover some of his dignity.
However, after looking like a n00b by crashing into a median, I’m sure that losing a body part and leaving it behind only added to his n00bn3ss
I’d hate to sound mean to someone who just lost a leg, but is he freaking stupid or what? I’m sure I would have noticed if a body part dropped off somehow.
I saw this on the news, too. I couldn’t understand why they spent a good half an hour on something I consider “freaky entertainment”, not news. The ensuing discussion over motorcycle safety, guard rails and sharp objects protruding from roadside objects was all just silly if you ask me. Everyone knows bikes are dangerous, so if you’re worried about whacking your leg off, get a car!
As for why he didn’t stop immediately, I guess he thought stopping on a busy road might cause an accident!
Yeah, it’s funny how one fool’s actions can spoil the fun for the rest of us. I’d love to ride a motorbike, but I think Reiko would be the one to take my legs if I did so ….
Considering the number of dangerous or downright stupid maneouvers that I’ve seen bikers do during my visits, I don’t see why this particular one would draw so much attention for road-safety reform.
