I saw this in the news, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.

Apparently a Japanese man riding a motorcycle failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier.  A friend picked up the missing limb and brought it the 2 km travelled by the oblivious rider.

This happened because the 54-year-old office worker was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central pillar.  He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next light.

Both the man and his leg were brought to the hospital, but the limb had been crushed so badly that it could not be re-attached.

Now, I’m not the brightest crayon in the box, but if you hit something while riding a motorbike, and feel extreme pain immediately afterwards, would you not stop to check it?  I know that some men try to over-compensate for some insecurities by saying “it’s just a scratch”, but a simple glance down would have told this person that he really should seek medical help sooner rather than later.

It’s a shame I couldn’t find a picture of the rider.  It would have been interesting to see how tough this guy was.
