January 29th, 2008Am I Wasting My Time?
It appears that I’m wasting my life writing posts and expressing my thoughts on various subjects.
This morning I woke up to find an email from a friend of mine with an embedded video warning me about my habits, telling me to change … with video. Watch this and tell me what you think:
If you can’t see the video, you can check it out at Walt’s Wisdom.
What do you think? Do I spend too much time blogging and not enough time living? ![]()
P.S. Thanks for the quick scare, Chris. I had never expected to not only see my name on someone else’s blog, but a video, too ![]()

What do you think? Do I spend too much time blogging and not enough time living?
Ask your wife. Me, I keep ‘em short and sweet - most days no more than 30 minutes, some days none. Most posts are written (if writing describes what I do, I think scribbling is more accurate) during downtime at lunch or at work.
30 Minutes … wow. If I limited myself to just 30 minutes a day, you’d see many more posts like this one here
I’ve set myself a limit of no more than 6 hours on any specific article in total. Considering how many of my posts are written over a span of days, this usually isn’t a problem. That said, for the really long posts that I think will be a good read, I’ll let the allotted time to get up closer to ten or twelve hours per post.
Of course, they’re not all like this. Most take about 45 minutes to an hour to write, check and release
Jason, that’s only a question that 1 person can answer…you.
You can’t live your life doing what others think you should be doing. You have to follow your own inner voices, your gut, your intuition, your heart, whatever you want to call it.
Try this out - ask yourself why you blog. Then ask “why” again to your answer and do that a minimum of 5 times. You should be looking at a stark picture in the mirror at that point with the real reasons you write.
Now, ask yourself if that’s you - if it’s something you really want. Do you enjoy the blogging, or does it seem like work - like a chore? In the end, you have to do it for yourself and no one else.
Another way to look at it - what would you be doing if you weren’t blogging? What would you be spending your time doing? Then weigh the two and ask yourself frankly which one serves you better in the long-run.
I for one enjoy your writing from time to time - but don’t keep doing it for me….do it for Jason or no one at all.
Ah, this is something that I do because I enjoy it. Blogging has gone from some obscure test to a full-fledged hobby. Perhaps the future holds more in store for this craft, perhaps it doesn’t. Regardless of the outcome, though, I’m quite content with the pass time.
This post had initially been put up as a joke, as the video was sent to me by a friend I used to work with. Perhaps I messed up on the wording, but I didn’t mean for it to sound as though I was considering retirement or anything. Heck, I still have lots of things to write about
Thanks for being a regular reader, Rob. I hope you get either some value, or a good chuckle out of some of these posts.
