It’s California Day, and Our Marriage Anniversary!

August 13, 2009 Home

Time sure flies when you’re having fun, doesn’t it?  Today marks the second anniversary of Reiko and I being (legally) married!  Oddly enough, though, this is also our third “California Day.”

What the heck is “California Day,” you ask?  I’m glad you did.  California Day has very little to do with the American state and much more on the very foreign norimaki known around the world as the California Roll.

California RollsThree years ago today, Reiko was in Canada visiting me.  We had gone to Victoria, BC a few days before to visit her last host-family.  It had been several years since they had seen each other and, since Vancouver is pretty close to Victoria, we decided to make the trek to the province’s quaint capital.  While in Victoria we managed to almost miss a great fireworks display, the hotel that we were supposed to stay in, and even a few busses that would take us to the various places on Vancouver Island.  It was during this trip that I also proposed to Reiko (for the third time) and presented her with a ring.  Everything was going perfectly … until we returned from Vancouver Island.

We had planned to go to The Salmon House Restaurant with some friends for dinner, and made it back to Vancouver with about an hour to spare.  To make a long story short, Reiko was famished and I needed to get some stuff from the mall.  We couldn’t get much food at that time of day, but we did manage to stop by one of the three local sushi shops near my home to pick up a six-pack of california rolls.  If memory serves, only one was eaten before we met up with our friends to head off to the restaurant.

Because of all the trouble that we had experienced throughout the few hours between leaving Victoria and meeting up with our friends, we decided that August 13th would forever be called “California Day.”  Crazy?  Sure.  But I’m sure that many couples have a similar story to tell for some date on the calendar.  What a crazy coincidence it is that we got married exactly one year later.

Here’s to many more California Days!

Do you have a similarly special day on the calendar?  I’d love to hear some stories

That might be a post for another year … I’m not so sure people would want to hear why I had to ask three times to get a “yes” … yet

You were fated to meet with the two of you tracing similar paths in BC before you met. Reiko dreamed of you whilst there before even knowing what you looked like. She probably hit you like a bolt from the heavens. Pretty romantic stuff.

Third time is the charm. Congrats.
