About
As you may have surmised from this site’s banner, my name is Jason Irwin and I’m a software developer living in Central Japan. I use this blog to share ideas and get my point across when people in real life stop listening. This is also the main place where I rant and rave about the everyday problems of life or misconceptions that I’ve had corrected when people who know better take the time to teach me something new.
Background
While growing up I had always thought that I’d be an architect. All of that changed in February of 1993, though, when I was shown a few tricks on an old 486 computer while killing time at high school. Ever since then I’ve been actively absorbing as much information as possible regarding computer programming and hardware.
In 2002 I moved from Hamilton, Ontario to Richmond, British Columbia where I found work at an international print media company. After working in the warehouse for two years I started to move around the organization before finally earning a programming position. Shortly thereafter a new love was discovered: databases.
Since working with Microsoft’s SQL Server, I devoted a great deal of attention to database design and architecture, earning several certifications from Microsoft, and even going back to university to get a degree in the field.
My Current Situation
Five years to the day after moving to BC, I once again made a long-distance move; this time to Gifu, Japan. Because my (now) wife was living in Japan, I decided it would be easier for me to leave Canada than for her to leave this country. Shortly after arriving, we were married and I began working at a well known language school, where I am still gainfully employed. I should also mention that later, just to make sure everyone knew the fact, the Mrs. and I got married again.
When not helping people with their language skills, I’m doing freelance programming for businesses around the world and designing websites whenever an opportunity arises. I hope to move into more of a leadership role in the next few years, working with a team to solve business problems for people around the world.
